Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi Shahmaghsoudi® School of Islamic Sufism has 1400 years of history. Historical records date back to the seventh century (A.D.), to the time of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), and Hazrat Amir-al-Momenin Ali, when M.T.O.® was founded by Hazrat Oveys Gharani.
The history of Sufism and of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® is traceable through the written works of the extraordinary spiritual teachers, the Sufi Arifs. They have written thousands of volumes dealing with all aspects of human behavior, physics, mathematics, philosophy, medicine, architecture, poetry, literature, crafts, sciences, and most of all, the realm of metaphysics and spirituality.
During the European Dark Ages, Islamic science and literature flourished, and the scholars of M.T.O.® were among those proceeding in scientific and mathematical experimentation and discovery while Europeans who attempted the same were being tried for heresy. The renowned works of Medieval Islamic civilization in all fields, particularly art and architecture, may be traced back to Sufi sources or the effects of Sufi influence. During these times, the influence of the masters of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® spread.
Three of the most important recent historical events are:
- The Translation of the Language of Sufism into the Language of Science Molana Hazrat Jalaleddin Ali Mir Abolfazl Angha, the 39th Master of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi®, School of Sufism, began the process of translating the delicate knowledge of Sufism into the language of science. This process was continued by his son, Hazrat Mir Ghotbeddin Mohammad Angha, and grandson, Hazrat Shah Maghsoud Sadegh Angha, the subsequent Pirs. Today, the same approach is being emphasized by the current Pir, Hazrat Salaheddin Ali Nader Angha, a U.S. trained scientist.
- The Opening of the Doors of Islamic Sufism to all Sincere Seekers
Due to Hazrat Shah Maghsoud’s immense knowledge in many fields, his voluminous writings and ceaseless efforts, a new chapter began in Sufism, and the reality of Islam became known as never before. Hazrat Shah Maghsoud opened the doors of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi, School of Islamic Sufism, to all sincere seekers for the first time in history. Prior to his time, the teachings of Sufism had only been available to a few carefully selected students. Therefore, the school is known as Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi Shahmaghsoudi®.
- The Expansion of the Teachings of Islamic Sufism
Under the leadership of Hazrat Pir, who has served as a bridge between East and West, the number of students of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi has increased from a few thousand to over 500,000. This expansion has primarily occurred in the Western World, and numerous new khaneghahs have been opened in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and North America.
The history may best be understood through the lives of the great Arifs of M.T.O.®
